We've added two settings in your Contest Settings page to help you manage what players can and cannot do with regard to your Squares Contest at SBPS.
They can be found in this box, which resides on the Contest Settings page:
Read the following sections carefully and decide which settings are best for you, and change them as necessary.
Contest Status
At any time, you can change the Contest Status from Open to Locked.
When the status is Open, players are simply allowed to reserve squares based on your password settings. This is the default setting, and should be set this way while you are hoping for more players to fill your Contest Grid.
When your Contest Status is changed to Locked, no players are allowed to reserve additional squares. If they click on any open squares, they will be informed that this contest has been locked by the Commissioner.
You can also achieve the same goal of locking your contest by changing the password to something nobody knows, obviously. But this is a cleaner way, and it informs the players that the contest is locked because you want it to be.
Players Can Edit/Delete Themselves
This setting is entirely about whether players are allowed to modify their boxes once they've joined.
If this setting is currently "YES", any signed in player will be able to click on their own squares and either remove themselves from the contest, or change the box text.
If this settings is currently "NO", they will be informed that only the Commissioner can make changes to boxes once they've been reserved.
Best Practices
So how should you use these settings? Short answer: However you want. Just in case you're looking for guidance from those of us who actually designed this, here are some pointers:
We recommend leaving the Status set to Open until you post the Numbers to your Contest. Once you post your Numbers, you should really set the Status to Locked - especially if you still have boxes that are open. It's not fair for people to stumble upon your contest, see that some great lucky numbers are available (think "0-7", or "3-7"), and jump in those squares.
As for the ability for players to edit their boxes, that's up to you. The reason we included this flag is because some nefarious players will delay payment for their entry fee until they find out what squares they got. Once they learn that their squares are garbage numbers (think "5-5"), they immediately jump back into the contest page, click on their bad box, and delete themselves, hoping that you never saw them there in the first place. They've vanished without a trace, and you will have a hell of a time selling that garbage square to anyone with a brain who knows how bad it is.
In Summary, it's up to you to use these features in as creative a manner as you wish.
